Tax-Smart Giving
We invite you to become part of the miracles at Donnelly College by investing in the mission and students. Here are some ways you can benefit Donnelly – a non-profit 501(c)(3) – while benefiting from tax incentives. Your financial advisors can provide personalized guidance to help your family reach financial and philanthropic goals through tax-smart giving.
Tax-Savvy Giving Options
- Appreciated public securities, real estate or other noncash assets to eliminate long-term capital gains tax.
- Email or call 913.621.8744 for account information to give your broker.
- Sell securities and donate the proceeds: Through tax-loss harvesting you could use the capital loss to offset capital gains - up to $3,000 of ordinary income.
- Give a percentage of private business interests to eliminate long-term capital gains tax.
- Bunch charitable contributions for multiple years into a single tax year to potentially produce a larger two-year deduction than you would get by claiming two separate years of standard deductions.
- Gift through IRA – Qualified Charitable Distribution - If you are over 73, you are required to make a minimum annual distribution (RMD) by April 1 each year.
- Gift through an irrevocable charitable remainder trust or a charitable lead trust. Designating a charitable remainder trust as your beneficiary will combine a gift to charity with income to your heirs.
- Name Donnelly College as a designated beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement plans. Donnelly will not have to pay income tax on bequeathed assets. Every penny will go to benefit our students.
- Gift from established family foundation or donor-advised fund - You can also name your donor-advised fund as a beneficiary of retirement assets, life insurance, annuities and/or a charitable trust.
Year-End Giving Important Information:
